My Story
When I was ten years old I had a marvellous teacher, Mr Ball. He introduced me to the stories of C.S.Lewis and taught me that the sky could be described as azure, summery, looming with clouds or festooned with a glittering firmament of stars. From that time onwards I became fascinated by the power of words and awed by the connective sinews that stories could wind around our hearts.
I marvelled at how language could transport us to fantastical worlds and describe experimental procedures. It was virtually limitless in its capabilities and I longed to wield it like Lewis, Tolkien, King, and the Margarets; Mahy and Atwood in the creation of my own unique tales.
Like every nascent writer, I travelled through time and space collecting experiences and honing my craft.
Life lead me from my native New Zealand to Japan, the Americas and Australia where I did everything from participating in cultural festivals to dispatching long haul trucks, all the while observing my fellow human beings and their relationships to each other and our shared planet.
Life blessed me with education, interesting work, stimulating hobbies, romantic partners, amazing friends, talented parents and siblings, my beautiful daughter, step sons and god son. But as many women do, I became consumed by those things losing touch with that part of myself from which stories flow. (I think it remained buried beneath heaps of laundry and shopping lists for a couple of decades.)
For the past three years, I have been excavating that wellspring and writing, writing and writing some more.
